June 1st followed May
It was a cold and raw day

The defender left the house
He was embraced by his loving spouse

Did he know that Monday would be his last?
In the service of others he maneuvered fast

Conviction of steel
A heart of pure gold
Always a warm hand to hold

He touched all those he met
In those minds Peter was his name
Once gifted with his smile and warmth
Their lives would never be the same

To love and to give offered him great joy
Despite the years he had the promise and soul of a beautiful boy

His family and friends always at the center
It wasn’t just for clients he assumed the role of defender

To champion, to protect and to love
That energy pushed him to soar above

A drive to succeed in the eyes of others helped make him wise
Life to him was joy and an unfolding surprise
Our loss that he met an untimely demise.

On that gray Monday the universe had its say
My dad was to go another way

The man that was a King took his last breath in Queens
7 years later I still struggle to know what it means.

An adopted child who fell into his family, who would have guessed
To call him my father, I was truly blessed.
